October 16 Forest Adventure

We had a pretty epic hike today, walking about 3 miles. We covered a lot of ground, and took a lot of snack breaks!

The kids came up with a lot of clever ways to explore the English language through rules about how they could talk, such as without using the letter e, then without using consonants. Then they spent a while talking only in multi-syllable words, then only in single-syllable words (à la Poetry for Neanderthals). Then they went back to only multi-syllable words.

We ended up around the pond for a nature journaling activity. Finding a spot to sit and observe, we did a bit of sketching and I challenged them to come up with 3 observations and 3 questions. Everyone was a little apprehensive but they did it! One kiddo said they’re not good at coming up with observations and questions, and I let them know that they didn’t really have to come up with anything, but that through just being in a space and looking around, they may experience observations and questions coming through them. It seemed like they all ended up having a good time with it!
